HIRING IS ONGOING. Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of Sacramento County is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to serving children in the foster care system who have experienced abuse or neglect. We train and support community volunteers to become advocates for these children—providing a consistent, caring adult presence and ensuring their voices are heard in court, at school, and in all areas of their lives. There are 4 trainings a year, so reach out to inquire when the next training starts.
Position Overview
As a CASA Volunteer Advocate, you will be appointed by a judge to advocate for the best interests of a child or sibling group in the foster care system. This is a unique and impactful opportunity to support a child through one of the most vulnerable periods of their life.
Responsibilities
- Spend consistent, quality time with your assigned child.
- Gather information from caregivers, educators, social workers, and others involved in the child’s life.
- Submit written reports to the court with recommendations based on the child’s needs and best interests.
- Attend court hearings and advocate for services and support that will help the child thrive.
- Commit to building a stable and supportive relationship with the child for the duration of your case.
Qualifications
To become a CASA volunteer, you must:
- Be at least 21 years of age.
- Commit to a minimum of 18 months of volunteer service.
- Pass a comprehensive background check.
- Have reliable transportation to travel throughout Sacramento County.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and appropriate professional boundaries.
Volunteer Ineligibility
You may not be eligible to serve as a CASA if you:
- Work or volunteer for an agency serving children in foster care or their biological families.
- Hold an active foster care license.
- Are in the process of adopting a child through Sacramento County.
- Have more than 3 minor moving violations in the past 3 years.
- Have had any major moving violations (e.g., DUI) within the last 4 years.
